Description of VocabSushi

VocabSushi is a game that can be played either online or as a downloaded App on a smartphone. This game can be used for many levels of education (middle school and up). The game is designed by a "Word List" based on different tests. The format of the game is to quiz the gamer based on their level of education, and which test they are studying for. Once theses options are selected, the gamer is given multiple choice questions in the categories of "Finish the Sentence" and "Choose the word that best matches the definition". The gamer then earns points for correct answers, and moves up in levels according to score/points. If the gamer is having trouble, there is a "Need a hint?" link they can click on in order to limit the choices down to two options. This ensures students can make sure they are studying with a low-stress application and that the focus is progression and better understandin/comprehending of the vocabulary.

Connecting VocabSushi to the classroom

Teachers can customize VocabSushi to make online/smartphone accessible assignments and quizzes. These homework assignments and quizzes can be customized to what vocab words you want the students learning. A teacher can check the progress of each individual student and have the game provide a point system, giving the students points for the answers they choose correctly. If using the point system, teachers can enforce an incentive-based use for VocabSushi. Perhaps not make it worth points on how well each student did, but make it worth completion points. Also have a set number that students should strive for, and offer small incentives for trying so hard (as a teacher I likeencouraging others through positive reinforcement, so this would be a useful method for me).
In the classroom one of the strategies taught for test-taking is to narrow answers down to two answers automatically, in order to give oneself a chance of 50/50 instead of the original 25/100 or 20/100. This game applies this strategy taught in the classroom to the game, with how the "Need a help?" link provides the narrowing down of the possible answers to two choices, giving the gamer a 50/50 chance of selecting the correct answer.

Connecting VocabSushi to technology (if it is not a technology enhanced game)

VocabSushi is an online game and is made available in APP form, therefore there are two ways possible for students to access the game.
  • As a teacher, you must ask if students have internet accessibility or a smartphone in the first week of school in order to see if ALL students are able to do the assignments given/quizzes given.
  • If all students do not have such access, then the teacher should set aside time each week in order to go to the computer lab so that all students can complete the work.
Teachers are able to purchase VocabSushi Pro for classrooms, and are able to customize it for their classes.

Connecting VocabSushi to the NETS standards

  • VocabSushi can be customized by the teacher, for each different class and connect it to state and national standards. It is a creative and authentic tool for each individual teacher.
  • With the access to such a tool, the teacher might have to ask school administrators if this tool may be used. The school may use this tool after successful use of the teacher. It is a much more creative and student-oriented way of learning vocabulary, then the standard paper quizzes.
  • VocabSushi has lists to help gamers study at all level. With introduction of VocabSushi in high school, the teacher can make sure to encourage students who like the game to use it fin the future. It has lists of words to help students study for tests such as the GRE, the MCAT, the ACT and SAT.
